One of our most recent projects involved the full installation of a complete Unifi setup including a Unifi Dream Machine (UDM), switch, access points, access control and cameras.

The client wanted to be able to track metrics across the entire network from internet usage through to employee attendance.

The Unifi ecosystem allows for the easy management of all components, which all have their own dashboard but can also be managed from one streamlined interface depending on the hardware that is installed.

With the advent of software defined networks such as Unifi the installation and management of infrastructures is becoming increasingly more efficient and does not require a full time resource to manage.  We manage these networks remotely for our clients from our office in Johannesburg, no matter where the infrastructure is located.

For the uninitiated, we have provided a short summary of the components that were installed and that can be managed from one central dashboard within the Unifi ecosystem:

UDM or USG

The UniFi Dream Machine or Unifi Security Gateway is a networking device designed and manufactured by Ubiquiti Networks. It is an all-in-one network appliance that combines several networking features such as a router, switch, Wi-Fi access point, and security gateway into one compact device. Both devices come with advanced security features such as IDS/IPS, VPN, and deep packet inspection.

The USG is aligned more to SMB’s and slightly larger organizations that don’t require granular control over their networks but would still like their networks to be secure. The USG does not include an in-built management dashboard.

The UniFi Dream Machine however is geared more towards enterprise networks and allows for further control over devices on the network than the USG, making it a more comprehensive and secure networking solution. Additionally, it can be easily managed through the onboard UniFi Network Controller software, allowing users to monitor and control their network from a single, centralized interface.

Unifi Network

UniFi Network is a line of networking products and solutions developed and produced by Ubiquiti Networks. It is designed to provide users with a comprehensive and easy-to-use network management platform for their homes or businesses. The UniFi Network product line includes routers, switches, access points, and security gateways, among other devices.

One of the key features of UniFi Network is its centralized management system, which allows users to monitor and control their entire network from a single, web-based interface. Unifi Protect

UniFi Protect is a video surveillance system developed and produced by Ubiquiti Networks, which is designed to provide users with a comprehensive and easy-to-use security solution for their homes or businesses. The system consists of cameras, Network Video Recorders (NVRs), and software for managing and viewing footage.
